Scofflaw Nail Varnish — Frequently Asked Questions

What does scofflaw mean?

It's a term that was coined during the Prohibition era, and means quite literally 'one who scoffs at the law'. As you can imagine, it was in reference to speakeasy patrons; those jazz dancin', knee-showin' sorts. While its rebellious origins are pretty much lost in the dustbins of dated slang, it's used here in its original sense, celebrating those who 'scoff the law' in their own personal (and hopefully) metaphorical ways.

Tell me about your polish...what's in it?

Like all the best and most dignified indie polish brands, Scofflaw Nail Varnish is 5-Free (containing no dibutyl phthalate, toluene, camphor, formaldehyde or formaldehyde resin) because we're in the business of awesome nail polish, not carcinogens. Only earth-friendly, cosmetic-grade pigments, mica, and glitter are used. Still, don't eat the nail polish. MSDS are available upon request. Scofflaw Varnish is hand-mixed in small batches, and then individually hand-poured and packaged.

How do I apply Scofflaw Nail Varnish?

For best results, apply thin coats of nail polish and wait until each layer is dry before applying the next. The first coat should be streaky and sheer, the second will start to provide full coverage, and the third (which is not always needed) will leave you with full coverage. Sometimes if it's extra glittery indie polish, it helps to 'dab' the nail polish on.

Here is a very useful guide showing visuals on how to apply indie polish as I described above, for those who like tutorials with pictures!

Always use a quality base coat and a top coat such as Seche Vite or Gelous (or both) with your Scofflaw nail polish to guarantee a shiny, smooth, chip-free manicure when you're out saving the world or changing the cat's litter box. Unfortunately, clear nail polish doesn't smooth out glitters and may leave the surface rough.

You can purchase Seche Vite (my personal fave) at any Sally Beauty Supply, Walgreens, or this handy amazon link! Yay for free shipping!

While all Scofflaw Nail Varnish is tested before being available to the public, some settling and separation of glitter/pigments is normal in all nail polish, especially if the polish has been sitting for a length of time. So give your bottle a good shake (or use it as a prop in your next jazz-hands routine) before each use. Each bottle contains stainless steel mixing balls. Indie polish tends to be on the thicker side (to help suspend all that glitter) so if you feel your polish is too thick, feel free to add some nail polish thinner (but never add nail polish remover, that can ruin your indie polish!).

To REMOVE your glitter indie polish, I like to use the foil method. Here's a helpful link that walks you through the steps!

Your online shop is empty! What does this mean! Help! Woe!

All items are subject to availability. Generally, if an item is showing on our website then it is available to order. However, during busy periods where demand may outweigh the amount of stock we have and we may not be able to fulfil your order. If this is the case, we will let you know as soon as possible. I will always list the next release/restock date on the Scofflaw Facebook page and through the Scofflaw mailing list.

Do you ship outside of the United States?

Yes, I do! Shipping can be expensive, however, so remember: Scofflaw is also carried internationally through the following online stockest: Femme Fatale (located in Australia)

What are your shipping policies?

Scofflaw Nail Varnish happily (nay, giddily!) accepts Paypal or credit card payments.

Your nail polish will be shipped via USPS First Class Mail with a tracking number. Priority Mail will be used in the event of a larger order, due to weight restrictions.

All polishes are mailed out in bubble mailers in addition to being wrapped securely in bubble wrap along with my fervent hopes that your mail carrier doesn't use the package as a hacky-sack.

I aim to have your polish mailed within 3 days of you placing an order, with a 7-10 business day maximum after a new collection release or a sell-out. If there is any issue that might delay your package being sent within that time-frame, you will be contacted immediately.

First Class Mail averages 3-7 business days after shipping, but do allow for basic Postal Service Flakiness. Please let me know if there is an unreasonable delay. If you are having an issue with a package that shows delivered, but didn’t show up, please contact your local post office ASAP and open a case for a missing package, as well as letting me know.

Is my privacy and personal info secure on your site?

All payments accepted on the site are processed by PayPal, and as such, your information is protected by SSL with an encryption key length of 128 bits (the highest level commercially available).

How do I get in contact with you for more questions?
